RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ON DATA AND POWER GRID ARCHITECTURES FOR INCREASED GRID VISIBILITY AND PROSUMER INTEGRATION

Context

Approximately €584 Billion of investments in power grids by 2030 are necessary, according to the EU Grid Action Plan, with a strong focus on the distribution grid and an allocation of around €170 Billion for digitalisation.

Challenge

EIDER aims to research in digital technologies to develop equipment and systems that allow the deployment of functionalities in Edge Computing architectures in the MV and LV power grid nodes to increase the grid visibility and control, introduce governance models for information management and integrate prosumers.

In order to overcome the aforementioned challenge, five objectives have been established in the project:

Generation of an automatic system of Edge microservices management and data transfer, preserving the principles of governance and sovereignty.
Development of Cloud – Edge Computing architectures to deploy virtualised software functionalities at the secondary substation and on power lines.
Implementation of machine learning and power capacity system technologies to deploy advanced monitoring and control functionalities.
Protection and development of cybersecurity solutions for Edge-virtualised components.
Proof-of-concept validation through cyber-physical systems in a laboratory environment.
